On Friday, June 16, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) unveiled the ICD-10-CM codes for the upcoming fiscal year 2024 (FY 2024). This latest release introduces 395 new additions, removes 25 codes, and includes 13 revised codes. The removals are a result of the expansion of diagnosis codes. In total, there will be 74,044 ICD-10-CM codes available for use in FY 2024. These codes will come into effect starting from visits or discharges occurring on or after October 1, 2023.

Chapter 20 experienced the most significant update, introducing 123 new codes. The expansion in this chapter specifically addresses foreign bodies, encompassing button batteries, plastic objects, glass items, magnetic and non-magnetic substances, rubber bands, food, non-organic items, as well as sharp objects that enter or pass through a natural orifice.
The Diseases of the Musculoskeletal System chapter follows with the second-highest number of changes, with 36 additions. These changes are related to age-related and other forms of osteoporosis, including specific sites in the left, right, and unspecified pelvis.
Chapter 7, focusing on Diseases of the Eye and Adnexa, saw 34 new additions and one deletion. The newly introduced codes cover conditions such as non-proliferative/proliferative sickle-cell retinopathy, specific eye muscle entrapment, foreign body sensation, and also include information regarding laterality.
Chapter 21 (Factors Influencing Health Status and Contact with Health Services) exhibits the fourth-highest number of changes, comprising 30 new additions and six deletions. As mentioned earlier, the deletions are a consequence of expanded diagnosis codes. The newly introduced codes encompass various aspects such as the observation of newborns for suspected conditions ruled out, individuals carrying Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria, encounters for prophylactic measures, family history of specific colon polyps, and caregiver non-compliance types. Additionally, enhancements have been made to the Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) section, incorporating new codes related to child custody and parental/adult-child conflict.
For further information regarding the new code topics, materials from the Coordination and Maintenance Committee meetings held in March and September 2022 can be referenced. These materials, including presentations, recordings, and meeting resources, are available on the CDC website.
It is important to note that the ICD-10-CM guideline changes were not released along with the new codes. However, the guidelines will be announced soon. The details of the guideline changes and new codes will be discussed during the August 15 edition of Monitor Mondays.
